Dimitrios Karpouzas

Professor, University of Thessaly

Dr Dimitrios G. Karpouzas is a Professor in Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology at the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the University of Thessaly. His research interests lie in the interactions of pesticides with soil microorganisms with focus on


(i) the microbial degradation of pesticides and the genetic mechanisms driving microbial adaptation for rapid pesticide biodegradation in soil,
(ii) the isolation, characterization and biotechnological exploitation of pesticide-degrading microbes using system biology and synthetic biology approaches,
(iii) the development of biopurification systems for the treatment of agro-industrial effluents,
(iv) the assessment of the ecotoxicity of pesticides on soil microorganisms.

 

He is the author of 101 articles in journals (citations 1500, h-index 23). Dr Karpouzas is associate editor of the journals BIODEGRADATION and FRONTIERS IN MICROBIOLOGY and President of the Hellenic Scientific Society of Mikrobiocosmos. He has coordinated several research projects funded by the EC (FP7-IAPP-MCSA; FP7-IRG-MCSA; H2020-IF-MCSA) and national funding bodies.
